Tips on Listening

  1. Listen to what is being said, not how it is being said.
  2. Want to listen, be sincerely interested.
  3. Try to find some bit of information that you can use.
  4. Don't be formulating your thoughts for a retort until after you have fully understood what is being said.
  5. Take notes, if appropriate.
  6. Summarize what has been said in your mind.
  7. Many times, words don't say it all.  Listen and look for non-verbal keys to what may be "between the lines".
  8. Try and eliminate your own biases until after a person talks.
  9. Look at the speaker.  Try not to let your eyes wander.
  10. Separate facts from opinions.
  11. Don't hesitate to ask questions.
  12. Restate what was said to make sure you understand.
  13. Let the speaker know you're interested so that they know what they are saying is interesting.
