Tips on Listening
- Listen to what is being said, not how it is being said.
- Want to listen, be sincerely interested.
- Try to find some bit of information that you can use.
- Don't be formulating your thoughts for a retort until after you have fully understood what is being said.
- Take notes, if appropriate.
- Summarize what has been said in your mind.
- Many times, words don't say it all. Listen and look for non-verbal keys to what may be "between the lines".
- Try and eliminate your own biases until after a person talks.
- Look at the speaker. Try not to let your eyes wander.
- Separate facts from opinions.
- Don't hesitate to ask questions.
- Restate what was said to make sure you understand.
- Let the speaker know you're interested so that they know what they are saying is interesting.
